VLAN Routing with Router 802.1Q Trunks. Almost all enterprise networks use VLANs. To route IP packets in and out of those VLANs, some devices (either routers or Layer 3 switches) need to have an IP address in each subnet and have a connected route to each of those subnets. For example, in layer 2 domain, traffic sent by PC in VLAN 10 can only be received by PCs in the same VLAN. VLANs can be configured using ISL or 802.1Q protocol. ISL (Inter Switch Link) is a Cisco proprietary VLAN tagging protocol whereas 802.1Q is the industry standard protocol. I want to isolate a computer on my local network, and am given to understand the best way to do this is to create a VLAN based on the ports on my router. I believe I can figure this out, but I wanted some help to make sure I do everything correctly.
